Meet your new best friend for anti-inflammation

Lately, several students have been talking to me about how to deal with inflammation in their bodies, especially since I mentioned that registration for the group detox with Dr. Resa Johnson is now open.

Inflammation in itself is not bad. In fact, it is the body’s natural, protective response to injury or destruction of tissues and serves to destroy, dilute or wall off the injurious agent or tissue.  But when inflammation becomes chronic, that’s when the trouble begins. When we decrease chronic inflammation in the body, everything works better, feels better, and moves towards greater health.

Here’s a recipe for an anti-inflammatory turmeric tea given to me by my teacher, Aadil Palkhivala. Make sure you use all of the ingredients, especially the peppercorn as it helps the body assimilate turmeric. With the exception of the the optional ingredient of honey, each of the necessary ingredients works together to bring the desired result of less inflammation in the body.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY TURMERIC DRINK

1 c. organic cow, goat, soy, nut, rice or coconut milk
1 t. organic turmeric powder
1/4 t. organic cardamom powder
1 finely crushed peppercorn
pinch of saffron, crushed

Bring all ingredients to a boil and then simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool to a drinkable temperature. Heat breaks down turmeric, making it easier to digest. Once it’s a drinkable temperature add 1 t. honey (optional). Honey is not meant to be heated so remember to add it just before drinking.

Some of my fellow Purna Yoga instructors swear by this as a daily drink. I would recommend drinking it daily or every other day for a week and see how you feel.

I’ve been learning about the connection between the standard American diet (SAD) of meat, dairy, and fat, which cause inflammation, and the development of chronic diseases from Dr. Michael Greger of Nutritionfacts.org and Dr. T. Colin Campbell (The China Study) at Nutritionstudies.org Check out their excellent websites and free videos and lectures. I just watched a video on anti-inflammatory turmeric being enhanced by combining with black pepper. So, thanks for this drink recipe!
